We at The Clown would like to congratulate Chef Sam, his wife Inas and their children Amy and Zach on their restaurant La Bella. Their menu showcases dishes “created from family recipes with love.” The Clown in York invites you to see us for your dining wine choices.
These are just a few wines we think you’ll find to create delicious pairings with the Southern Italian dishes at La Bella:
Ottella Lugana, Veneto
Italy’s answer to Chablis, without the Chardonnay! This is a brisk, elegant white wine from a small family operation on the southern shores of Lake Garda in the Veneto region of Italy. The nose is delicate and a little briny, the taste has lemon, a way of recognizing acid and apple, which is a way of recognizing fruit. This is a wine simply made for fish. Try it with haddock, mussels or anything from the sea!
Tasca d’Almerita Regaleali Bianco, Sicilia
This was the first wine produced by Count Tasca d’Almerita on the Regaleali Estate. A blend of three Sicilian grapes –
Inzolia, Catarratto and Grecanico
This Sicilian white wine is fermented in stainless steel to create a versatile, refreshing wine that is, is dry and crisp with excellent structure and a superb fruity finish. You’ll find aromas of apples, peaches and grapefruit. On the palate it is velvety, rich, and intense with bright acidity. A wonderful pairing with antipasti, salads and seafood.
Triade is a blend of Fiano, Greco, and Falanghina. The grapes are selected from low-yielding vineyards in the province of Avellino, in the region of Campania in Central Italy. The wine has wonderfully rich tropical fruit and vanilla aromas. On the palate it is subtle and soft, with a perfect balance of fruit flavors and citrus acidity. This Italian white is perfect on its own or excellent with fish, white meats, and pasta with white sauce. Winner Silver Medal London – Decanter 2010
Scagliola Barbera “Mati”, Piedmont
The “Scagliola” estate is located on a hill at San Siro in the town of Calosso. The estate is run by the brothers Maggiorino and Mario Scagliola and was started by their grandfather. Mati is short for Mathilde. Barbera is Piedmont’s most juicy, straightforwardly delicious red wine. Scan any Piedmontese restaurant around dinnertime; a bottle of Barbera will be on most tables. This Barbera is young and energetic. Made in stainless steel with a small percentage, 10% agedin large Slovenian oak barrels. Its fresh fruits and zestiness make this a great everyday glass of wine. Excellent with chicken, veal, lasagna and dishes with tomato-based sauces.
Fonterutoli Badiola, Tuscany
Castello di Fonterutoli is situated on a historic property just south of Castellina in Chianti. The estate has been in the hands of the Mazzei family since 1435. Badiola is 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot, oak barrel aged. The wine is deep, inky purple with intense aromas of dark fruits and cocoa. Soft and smooth on the palate, with flavors of wild blackberries and raspberries, this will pair well with chicken and pork dishes, and is a nice match with pizza.
Taburni Domus Aglianico, Campania,
Aglianico comes from Aglianico DOC Taburno, where the grapes are grown at 1700 feet above sea level. Aglianico is a full-bodied wine with a pleasant fragrance. Floral aromas on the nose, the fruit is ripe with flavors of spicy, brambly fruit & hints of flint. The finish is dry, yet the fruit lingers on. This wine is dark, brooding, delicious. Flavors of bright and robust red fruits, with ripe tannins and a silky texture. This Italian red is a great accompaniment to beef, lamb, and bold cheeses.
